I have a new look to my blog and have moved over to Wordpress. The clean lines and friendly-to-use features for users attracted me over and convinced me to make it my new home for my blog. Please bookmark the site to keep updated on the new blog! :)

Margaret and Dan are experts when it comes to rocking it in front of the camera, especially on their wedding day. When I say expert I don't mean qualified for incredible imagery, but natural and inviting to capturing what already is (even during a blazing hot afternoon). For guests and family reading this all of the images will be available online shortly.

I'm not a big shoe person for myself, but I love taking photos of them :)

I like it when funny, unexpected surprises come up like getting a call from a producer from KNBC News asking if they could use my snow video from Mammoth for the 11 p.m. segment. What's great was that the producer stumbled upon my You Tube page, browsed for my contact info and got my phone number and e-mail from my photography website. I felt very special and silly. I hope this works out to be good advertising for me. Who wouldn't want a photographer who knows how to enjoy life?

Boys Will Be Boys

There's this small window close to where I sat in the center's office. Kids often peered in when they passed by to see if someone would return their attention. One afternoon two young boys took interest in my work. I was in between my classes uploading photos so that the memory cards would be empty for the next student to use. These boys waited as they watched me move things back and forth on my desk. I knew what they wanted, so I took my camera nearby and spent a few minutes playing with them through my lens.

I find it odd that I've never shared any of my album designs online...I design as much as I photograph! This weekend I'll be heading up to Mammoth Lakes to cover a destination wedding that I've been waiting all year to do. Spotlighted is the couple's guestbook album that features their favorite photos from their engagement session.

All of my wedding collections include an album just like this one where you can customize the cover of your album and choose the images that you want in it. It's a wonderful addition to your wedding day that'll give your guests something nice to sign in and a book that you'll enjoy looking through for many years.

Michelle & Alex know how to throw a party, the sort-of-party where you want to bump "Tonight's gonna be a good night" by the Black Eyed Peas kind of party. The start of the day began in Westwood and on to the Skirball Cultural Center where the wedding day continued and ended. From the dress to the first dance to the closing hour everything was beautifully planned and went as smoothly as you'd want a wedding to go. It was a wonderful first event to photograph after my return from overseas. :)

Paparazzi- Spotlight

Last night I met up with several (make that about 100) photographers at the LA Smug Mug in Studio City. With a group of willing models and flashing lights we probably looked like a mad run of paparazzi on Ventura Blvd, but it was all in good fun. What I love most about the photographer community is that there's a hunger to learn and share what we know with others. If you missed out and want to join us next time drop by our next meeting on October 15th at the Global Cafe. It's free and a great way to grow in your craft while meeting other incredible photographers.

The Shootsac- Review

Know how it's sometimes funny to discover that you're matching with someone else? Well, how about when your camera bag matches with the hotel's pillowcases? I think that rarely happens expect it did with me at my last wedding. I was rocking my new cover of my Shootsac bag and it was a lovely surprise to see the design again after I placed my bag down in the bride's room.

The Shootsac is a bag designed for photographers who want to carry something fashionable, but definitely useful and mobile for a quick-moving photographer. Over the summer they were great enough to sponsor my Inspiration workshop and donated a free Shootsac to one of my guests (congrats, Carol!). When you flip the cover, which is also interchangeable so you can have a different design if you'd like, you'll find perfect size pockets to slip your lens in. It's holds them securely and without too much resistance when pulling them out. There are also pockets on the back of the bag that you can put your phone, batteries, cards, car keys, or whatever else you usually carry with you when you're shooting a photo session or a long wedding day.

I've been using the bag for almost 2 years and still love it. If you're looking for a new camera bag Shootsac may be your best option.

Meet My Students- Spotlight

If you haven't seen any of my videos this is the one video you should watch. It is 15-minutes long, so I posted it up on Vimeo that allows me to put it full-length. A different, shorter version is up on my You Tube page.

You'll hear me narrating throughout the video. I showcase a few of my students and wasn't able to share every interview with you, because you probably wouldn't want to sit down and watch that long of a movie. If you supported me during program financially you will be receiving a DVD copy with bonus videos from the rest of my time in Cambodia.

Angkor Wat in the Kingdom of Cambodia

Deep in the relentless heat and farmland of Siem Reap there are stunning ruins for the eyes to feast on. From Phnom Penh I took a 6 hour bus ride to explore Angkor Wat, a temple that is said to be the world's largest single religious monument. The ruins of Angkor are a UNESCO World Heritage site and thousands of tourists visit every year to study and admire the temples.

As you can see from my previous post my day started at sunrise. The first photo you'll see is a series of 4 images. Starting from the top left to the bottom right are shots taken sequentially between 5:35 to 5:50 a.m. Follow through the rest of the photos and you'll see a glimpse of my 10-hour adventure. I felt like I was exploring out of the movie Tomb Raider...not sure why? :)

During the mid-day I had explored for several hours and was feeling the physical exhaustion from walking in the sun, but I pushed forward and had my moto-driver take me out to Banteay Srei, another temple about 30-min drive from Angkor. It was a beautiful site of elaborate wall carvings. Nearby there was a lotus garden and plenty of green to go around. The drive through the province was also worth going out, although dozing off on the back of a fast moving moto during midday was a little tough for me to handle. You'll see a photo of my driver at the very bottom of this post.

Back in Los Angeles

My absence from the past 5 weeks can really pile up a list of things-to-do, but I'm happy to be back in the city of angels. I just begun sifting through the photos I took in Siem Reap during my tour of Angkor Wat and the other temples. Since there are too many images to get through tonight I'll just share one with you as a sneak peak into my future post and new video that I'll be releasing later this week.

I woke up at 5 a.m., hired a moto driver to take me to Angkor Wat, and followed the sunrise over the temple for this shot among many. May this please your eyes for now. :)

Students' Photographs- "Tiny Toones Freeze"

With the past month flying by the photography program will be wrapping up with its last class this upcoming Monday. I'm so proud of all the students and their work! Out of the three classes that I've taught daily here over 50 students have eagerly participated. With the budget I had fundraised I selected and printed 27 photographs, each representing a student and their unique capture, and installed them at the Meta House, Cambodia's first art and communication center in Phnom Penh. Friday night they hosted our opening reception, giving us their largest gallery to exhibit the student's work. From what I observed, around 100 guests dropped by to see the student photographers' work, Tiny Toone's peformance, and to watch the documentary featuring the beginning of Tiny Toones. If you weren't able to make it out they are displaying the photographs until September 3rd.

I'd like to share with you the photographs that I featured at the Meta House. Every photo has it's own story, along with the student who took it; unique in every way. I've marked down the ones that SOLD during the opening reception. I'm not sure, yet, which ones sold yesterday.

It's incredible what can be achieved in a short program. I know I'm very fortunate to have witnessed their growth and confidence gained in their newfound craft. In the next post or so I'll be sharing a special video that features interviews with my students and other photos. Bangkok, Thailand

After our short trip off the shores of Thailand we returned to the city of Bangkok. For the rest of the week we explored shopping malls and night markets, enjoying the food and life of the city. Our main mode of transportaion were taxis. On average a taxi ride came to around $1-$2. We didn't get to catch a muay-thai fight or see Khao San road, a place where many backpackers stay in the city. The city is definitely a place I wouldn't mind returning to. Check out the video at the bottom of the photos to get a glimpse of Bangkok.

"Same Same But Different" Rooms of Thailand

There's this phrase I've heard used in Thailand and Cambodia where a seller explains to a buyer that the item/price they're looking at is, "Same same, but different." As I think about it now I realize that I don't fully understand that phrase, but I know it's a simple way of cutting corners in a conversation when you just want to shop.

During my week in Thailand I stayed at four different places each with it's own unique characteristics. The first was the guest house at Ko Samet. I don't remember the name of the place, because we dropped in on it during our search after arriving on the island. It was nothing special to me and the towels we used had holes in them.

Another hotel we stayed at in the city of Bangkok was The Key hotel. I felt very comfortable staying there, because of their invitation to take advantage of their hotel services. Such as having a fridge and a microwave to use, free wi-fi, or free shampoo and body soap. You can use a towel (with no holes), throw it on the floor and get a new one in the morning. Although, that's not a very green thing to do.

We also stayed at this other hotel called the Miami Hotel. I didn't include any photos of this place, because I refused to take any. It was dirty and scary. The halls look like you're in a haunted school and everything in the room hasn't been changed since the 70's. We even found a blood stain on our curtain. (Ok, maybe I should've taken photos for kicks). It was not our choice to stay there, but a friend of a friend booked the rooms for us without knowing that the hotel is rundown.

The last we stayed at was a hostel called Refill Now, a place I wanted to stay at from the beginning of the trip but didn't get to until the last couple of days. I loved it so much that I made a video tour for you to see (at the bottom of this post). The entire hostel is naturally well-lit in the day, because it's encased with tall windows. You're asked to take off your shoes when you enter your floor, because of the cleanliness inside the rooms. It felt like I was stepping into a pop-culture spread, because the decor and even our room keys was purposely designed to be a Japanese/modern-trendy style. The place inspired me to want to develop and manage a hostel one day. Not sure where I'd like to have it, yet, but all my blog readers will get 15% off their room if they book through me. :)

Ko Samet, Thailand

I'm about five entries behind from all that I like to share with you, but here is a post from my recent trip to Thailand. I traveled with my friend Lisa, who is the director of Tiny Toones. Our friends Epic and Barks from Japan, who I just met the day before the trip, also traveled with us to Bangkok for a time of exploration.

The day after we arrived the four of us took a bus from the eastern bus terminal to Ban Phe, the town where you dock onto a boat to get to Ko Samet. Ko Samet is the closest island retreat for residents of Bangkok. It's not yet as touristy as most of the southern off-shore islands of Thailand, so running into a mass crowd of tourists was not a problem for us.

Our bus ride to the town was over 3 hours and cost us $6/each and our boat ride to Ko Samet was another $6. On the island there are many beaches to visit, but for our short stay we went to the most popular and closest one called Hat Sai Kaew, also known as Diamond Beach because of it's silky white sand. I knew that last part to be true the second my feet touched the beach.

The odd thing about this beach was running into so many stray dogs. Someone had to bring the dogs to the island, but why bring them over if they're going to be homeless and taking over the town? The most intimidating moment during my trip was walking the shore at night and having a dog follow and search us for food. Thankfully, another group of people walked past us and having failed to find anything on us the dog followed the other group.

Firefly, Don't Burn Out So Quickly

Underneath my door I watched a tiny green bulb fly into my room. It swung high from left to right like someone on a tire swing on a lazy summer night. I can't recall the last time I saw a firefly, but encamped in my mosquito net I felt safer on my bed to not encounter it closely. The sound of my fan humming in a buzzing tone seemed to invite the firefly to its plastic cage of a musical stage. So, it made its way closer to me, closer to the fan, except it landed much too quickly onto the rotating blades. There followed a sound of a slap and the pinch of its lightbulb, an uneasy sight to witness. Never in my mind did I think my encounter would be so brief and with surprise.

The hours long into the night moved slowly with the heat that beaded against my tired body. I could only think of staying cool and wishing for a cold glass of water or a wrap of cold air to take me into its wind. I failed to fall asleep with ease and I couldn't stop thinking about the firefly. Its short lived light reminded me of short lived dreams. How many dreams have been thought up, but casted down so abruptly because of surprises? I ask this of myself. Don't dreams own a hand in magic that charm us to admire it's flight into existence? Dreams are meant to be enjoyed by both the charmer and the charmed, right? It's where inspiration starts and creativity begins. Hmmmm, I wonder. Has the night's weariness cause me to talk poetically?

No. Sometimes I like to write like this...

I admit that the humming of what appears to be a non-threatning tune can sometimes deter us from continuing the pursuit of our dreams. (The humming tune meaning the fan that killed the firefly.) Right. On this adventure in Cambodia I've come across many challenges that try to detract me from my purpose here. I'm out of my comfort zone. I'm hot and there're mosquitos picking on me. I'm without money, but believing to put on an incredible exhibit for my students. I'm a tough cookie working it's way towards sweetness.

I hope I didn't lose some of you, my readers, because of this entry. I like writing creatively and I thought it might be a better way to invite you to watch my latest video that gives you a peak into the photography classes that I'm teaching here. Also, an interesting way to encourage you to let your dreams light up with life and to inspire others along the way.

In Need of More Fundraising

There is never an easier way of asking for money then to simply and respectfully invite others to help. With the addition of the third class it creates a greater need for funds. In preparation of our upcoming gallery at the end of the month I need to raise money for the printing and framing costs. Originally, we were going to feature 20 of my students, but now the total is 30 students plus my own work. I've depleted my funds that I raised before the trip, so there is no other choice but to do a new fundraiser. If you're able to help out by giving $20, $50, or $100 it would go incredibly far for Tiny Toones. My goal is to raise $500 by Friday, August 21. This will accommodate the new set of students and be added to the budget for the photo exhibit supplies.

*(updated) Meta House in Phnom Penh has graciously allowed us to use their largest gallery for our event later this month. The event is titled, "Tiny Toones Freeze: Breakdancing for a Better Future." There will be a special performance by some of the dancers of Tiny Toones and a DJ spinning music during the opening night of the exhibit. Here is a blurb from their site on the event: "US photographer Jen May Pastores taught basic fundamentals of photography to the kids over 4 weeks. We invite you for tonight's exhibition opening, an auction and a performance by Cambodia's best-known breakdance crew."

Photography Class Popular with Students

The photography class is in such a demand here at Tiny Toones that we added a third class in addition to the other two that I teach everyday. So far the students have embraced photography as a means of expression. It's been interesting having a translator for my class and holding a three-way conversation between the students, the translator, and I.

I'll be moving the students fairly quickly since we have to prepare for our photo gallery coming up at the end of this month. I'll be focusing mainly on photojournalism and guiding them to document their lives and share their story. There are many obstacles that we're facing like having my lame laptop to work from and a limit of cameras and funds, but I know somehow things will come together. God is good like that no matter how lame I am or what situation I'm in.

First Weekend in Cambodia- New Photos and Video

One of the first things you'll notice about Phnom Penh are all the motos driving around on the street. Next to tuk-tuks, cars, and bicycles motos are the main mode of transportation; and up until I arrived in the city I had never rode on a motorcycle. Due to the way traffic manuevers on the streets I believe riding on one here is a unique and thrilling kind. Hardly anyone follows traffic laws here. You'll see oncoming traffic heading your way on your lane simply because they're taking a short cut. The odd thing is that I haven't seen any accidents, yet, so it works for them here. Probably because motos and tuk-tuks stay around 40mph, so everyone is relatively driving in a slow pace.

On average I spend about $1 on a meal. The most pricey food item I've bought was a $1.30 iced coffee. The closest market to where I'm staying is the Russian market which is on the east side of the city. I've done little shopping, but I have splurged on $6 second-hand books. One of the best things I can take advantage of during my time here is having the privilege of reading books. Maybe it's good that my laptop freezes and the internet speed is sticky slow, because I can move through books much faster.

Although the city itself is rich the majority of the people living here are poor. The country is rapidly moving towards growth and progress, so there are many opportunities to influence and invest but it is very common to come across homeless children as young as five years old begging or laboring for change. I've also encountered disabled fathers or mothers holding their baby on the streets crawling around for help. It is a scene that leaves me helpless.

Later this month I'll be visiting the Killing Fields, the genocide museum, and Angkor Wat to further learn about the history and culture of the Kingdom of Cambodia, but so far the conversations I've been having with the locals and Khmer-Americans have given me a lot to swallow and a responsibility to respond.

Dear Internet,

I apologize for not blogging lately. I've been in Thailand this entire week with only an hour to spend online each night before I fall asleep from a long day out of the hostel. Within the hour that I am online my laptop demands that I restart at least 4 times during my session. You can imagine that this slows my progress of preparing my images for you. It never crossed my mind before to ask if anyone had a spare laptop to use before I left on my trip, and now the one I'm using is no longer reliable. Believe with me that I can still use it for my photography class that I start on Monday. I know that this is still no excuse to delay my updates. It's funny that somewhere in the back of my mind I've convinced myself that there are followers of this blog waiting to read a new entry, so to all of you who happen to be one of those people know that I am mindful of you and have been trying daily to share stories, photos and videos with you. Tomorrow I return to Cambodia where I will not be as distracted with the country to get to know them in a few days, so there will be more time for me to happily blog. :)

Cambodia- 7/31

Currently, there are 95 minutes left for my video to upload up on You Tube because that's the quickest internet I can get out here, so show me some love when I get this entry up! :)

I'm sitting in a muggy room on my bed protected by a blue mosquito net. So far I have bites on my legs and back. I think one bug got lucky to sleep in the net with me. I also have a runny nose from my allergies that I credit towards the air pollution here. Either that or I got it from the very sick passenger who sat next to me on my 13 hour flight to Teipei. Hmmm...

Cambodia reminds me of the Philippines so there hasn't been much of a culture shock for me. When I arrived at the airport waiting for my friend, Lisa, to pick me up I had over ten different guys approach me asking me to ride on their tuk-tuk. When I told them I was being taken care of a few of them tried their best to convince me that my friend wasn't coming. That was a hoot!

I'm staying in Tiny Toone's volunteer house that is pretty large. You'll see in the video. There's a maid here who cooks our meals for us when we're home and does our laundry. She's a young local, about 20-years-old. For dinner last night she cooked us pig ears and no one was in the mood to eat it, so she made us fried eggs and rice and that was better. At night there's a security guard who sets up post by the front gate. I woke up around 4 a.m. and was climbing around upstairs making a lot of noise. He came into the living room downstairs and looked up at me in wonder. I waved apologetically and felt better that he was doing his job.

It's rather dangerous to walk on the streets here, including in the day time. You just have to be very aware of traffic and your surroundings. It's pretty impressive to watch how cars and motos maneuver their way on the roads, many times coming thin close from being in an accident. I also included some of that footage in the video.

I dropped by with Lisa at the center to visit the kids. I loved how there were always people dancing the entire time I was there. Kids as young as 4 to age 23 were helping each other learn the breakdancing moves. It was an encouraging and positive thing to watch and it got me tapping my feet and imaginging myself dancing like how they were dancing.

I also broke the first rule my friends and family told me not to do and that was to not eat any street food. Outside the center a man rolled by with a cart so he could serve ice cream in a sweet bun, sort of like you were getting a hot dog but with ice cream instead. Lisa urged me that it was alright, so I ate one and it was delicious. I also felt fine afterwards, but I won't make it a habit to eat street food. :)

As a photographer I noticed that the lighting at the center is incredible. It's an outdoor location with an open shade so they're many places for the sunlight to bounce of off. Many of the walls, too, are painted with detailed and colorful murals so it'll make for interesting backgrounds. I won't be returning to the center until a week from now, because I'll be heading to Thailand in a couple of days, but the photography program is in full-effect. I'll be teaching a class earlier in the afternoon for 7 to 14-yr-olds and another one later in the day for 15 to 22-year-olds. Each class will have 10 students so each student gets their own camara to use. I'll be interviewing each one, so you guys will get a chance to meet them and follow their work.

Day 1 in Cambodia....actually, not yet

We think of bad days as things not going our way, but when I think about what happened the sequence of things going wrong felt prepared. In an odd way it seemed as if it was going someone else's way.

My flight was scheduled for 1:15, so I arrived early to check-in except in truth I showed up 12 hours late. I mistook the time and was supposed to fly out at 1:15 a.m. and not p.m. When I asked when the next flight out was they said 4 days from now, but was told that the flight is full with no seats open. The next available flight after that was 2 weeks away, too far away. I asked to be put on the standby list and if anything opens up to call me. Mistake 1: Arrived at the wrong time.

Calling with no phone is hard, especially if you don't have any phone numbers on you of people you know. In an effort to pack smart I left my iPhone at home and packed another cell that I would use with a sim card that I was planning to buy in Cambodia. In my current situation I had no phone or numbers to call for a ride back home from the airport. There was never a trip I've done where I didn't have numbers written down in a notebook except for this trip. Mistake 2: Didn't have a back-up of phone numbers written down somewhere else.

I decided to use the airport's internet to find my roommate's numbers online. There were 4 computer stands that took cash or credit, but only 2 computers were available to use. I soon discovered that neither of their card scanners worked so I had to go get change for dollar bills. I lugged my bags to the lease crowded restaurant in the food court to break my $5. I returned to the computers and saw that there were no longer any computers available, but there was a kid banging on one of the keyboards so I requested for me to use it instead. When I put in my $1 it was rejected. Apparently, all the computers couldn't take cash because they were all broken. In a growing frustration I decided to return to the check-in point and ask if I could borrow their computer (if they allowed me to). Mistake 3: Wasted time.

The lady who tried to check me in earlier was nice enough to lend me her blackberry to go online and find a phone number. For a while I waited for her browser to load, but it moved very slowly. I continued convincing myself that it was important to get the phone number, so I waited. And waited. Mistake 4: I should've borrowed someone's iPhone instead.

I went back to the computers to try again. One that I didn't use had a credit card scanner that worked, so I was able to go online for about 5 minutes. Unfortunately, I was charged $12 for it. I succeeded in getting 2 of my roommate's numbers so I searched for a payphone where I used the few quarters I had to get in touch with the both of them. Both of them were unable to pick me up from the flyaway, an airport bus station close to where I live. There is no mistake here.

I decided to take the bus back to the valley. The workers at the flyaway recognized me and gave me confused looks. I asked them about bus routes, but no one knew because not too many people take advantage of public transit. I ended up taking a taxi because I didn't want to ride an hour on the bus to go 5 miles. The taxi ride ended up being over $20. Mistake 5: Didn't save my money to ride the bus.

When I got to the door of my apartment I remembered that I had accidentally given my sister my house key. I was home, but locked out. I left all my bags at the door and knocked on all of my surrounding neighbor's doors. No one answered. I went to the laundry room and one of the maintenance guy's lended me his cell to where I called my roommate again and asked if she could leave work for a few minutes to unlock the door for me. Fortunately, she was able to do that. I went inside towards my computer and phone to make some calls and e-mails. It was four hours later from when I left to go to the airport. Mistake 6: Gave my house key away.

The rest of the day I was very frustrated, worried, and down. Yes, I can say this on my blog. Candidness can be good so long as I don't indulge you too much. Anyway, I'm very lucky to have friends and family who have the gift of encouragement and can be sensitive to the situation. Might I mention, too, that this is a story with a good ending?

This morning my airlines called with news that a seat opened for me, so I will be flying out in a couple of nights to Cambodia. It's for the same 1:15 a.m. time and I will be on that plane. :)

On that note I included a photo of my bags. I will be gone 5 weeks and have succeeded in packing light. Or at least lighter than some. Below you'll see 2 check-ins and 2 carry-ons. The blue backpack has my clothes, items for personal hygine, and small miscellaneous items. The black suitcase has my student's cameras, battery chargers, photo paper, and awesome donations. Then there's my purse with my camera, wallet, and other important stuff like a hairbrush and snacks to eat on the plane. The other bag has my laptop, a notepad to plan things on, and a book to read. This time I will be bringing my iPhone for emergencies.

God is good and maybe I'll eventually know if there was a bigger reason for missing my flight.

Save The Date Trailer- Jen May Photography Exclusive

You read right and now can see the surprise with my newly released product, Save the Date Trailers. With the economy down and individuals finding creative ways to save money I've thought of a way to lend a helping hand. Instead of mailing out Save The Date cards I've created Save The Date Trailers that you can easily upload online and share on Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo, etc. You'll also have the choice of ordering DVD's so that you can mail them off to guests (if you don't mind spending cash on S&H). I think I'm one of the few, if not only, photographer offering this product. :)

I personally think there's no cooler way to share your wedding date than with a fun video. It transports the cute photos of you and your fiance from a postcard into a mini-movie, a great glimpse into why they should witness your union on the big day!

In this video I photographed my clients, Jen and Patrick, who lovingly agreed to be a part of this new product. I love that couple for their genuineness and big heart. Thank you for a great engagement session. I can't wait to have fun on your wedding day :)

Inspiration Workshop a Success!

This past weekend I held my first photography workshop to raise money for my cause in Cambodia. Since I'm teaching a 4-week program there, free to the youth of Tiny Toones, I'm in need of camera supplies. Fortunately, I've raised enough funds to purchase 10 digital cameras and other necessities for the class.

At this workshop I taught the basics of shooting manually and "How to be an Incredible Photographer 10 different ways." Everyone who came out to support really did a great job in making me feel like I shared enough good info in 3 hours, so thanks! :)

I'm very amazed at the community coming together to support this cause and cannot doubt this goodness of bringing hope in a different way. I've received great feedback from the workshop and intend to do more in the near future. :) Here's a short video giving you a glimpse of the photographers who came out to support.

San Francisco Photographer Shootout

I'm apparently working my way north along the state of California (after hopping from Honolulu) and now doing a meet up with photographers who are attending the summer program of the Academy of Art University here in the city. I asked the R.A. if I can post up fliers and it immediately got approved. Am I a dork wanting to this during my short time here? Possibly, but in the dork world that makes me cool.

Photograph your living space

Part of celebrating life is remembering places you've been to and spaces you've been apart of. Oftentimes we'll focus on the people in our lives, but I think the place you call home deserves the spotlight, too. And if you're like me and travel around a lot you sleep and work out of many different rooms. In an earlier post I shared a quick video tour of the apartment that I'm staying in here in the city, but here are some photographs that embraces a stillness with it's own strength in storytelling. What makes a good photographer?

Every now and then I'll come across someone who compliments my work and follows up with, "You must have a nice camera!" Before when I first took photography seriously I would be offended with this statement, because whenever I enjoy a piece of art, music, or food I never ask the artist, musician, or chef what sort of brush, instrument, or pan they use. So, what's the difference for photographers?

My theory is that there are cameras with automatic modes available for consumers that make it easier for them to use. Some people might come to the conclusion that a good photographer is good because they have a good, expensive camera. They forget that just like any other craft it's about technique and how the photographer chooses to use the camera. If you put several photographers in a room and tell them to shoot the same scene you will get different images, because every person sees life differently. That's what makes photography beautiful. It's a conversation between the photographer and the viewer.

"So, if I can get a hold of a camera with lots of buttons and capabilities than I will be able to take awesome photos, right?" No, not really. That is unless, you know how to use it and understand what everything means. A musician is praised for the way they compose a song and write their lyrics. They had to learn the art of music and songwriting. If you want to take good photos you have to learn the art of composition and lighting and how you can achieve that with whatever camera you use even if it's an iPhone camera, a $20 toy plastic Holga camera, or a Canon 5D Mark II. The camera is just a tool and it's up to the photographer to create art.

If someone who doesn't understand their camera can take good photos the question is can they repeat what they did and do it again? We return to a chef because they can repeatedly cook up our favorite dish, so if you want clients to return to you for your consistent style of excellent work then learn how to use that camera you've got. So, next time when you come across an awesome photographer ask them how they got the photo they did so you can also learn the fundamental concepts and do it yourself.

For those who want to know I shot with a Canon 20D (considered to be a semi-professional camera) and a 50mm 1. 4 lens. The f/stop and shutter speed info is below the image.

Inspiration Series- Artwork

I realize that I don't often put together a series of artwork, but I recently had some free time and I captured a collection of flowers. Instead of photographing different kinds of flowers I instead photographed the same flower with different angles and depth of field by focusing on different details. In LR I then developed the images to a nice subdued tone and came up with this Inspiration collection.

My vision is to print these out fairly large like 24x36. I'll visit the framing store and see what will go nicely with it, but I've decided to have them bleed to the frame with no borders. I'll visit some spas or cafes and see who's interested in this series to purchase. What do you think?

Studying in San Francisco

Just a couple of weeks ago I spontaneously applied to be a part of a free workshop program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. To my amazement I got immediately got accepted and was provided an apartment to live in the city. It's a short 3-week program that I'll be participating in, but works perfectly with my schedule since I fly out to Cambodia only 2 days after my last day of class. It's been a few years since I've been in school mode, so going to class and meeting students will be a lot of fun for me. I'm excited to be living in the city and hope to get a few photo sessions in while I'm here. Here's a quick video of my place. I just moved in today and had to share some of the experience with you :)

Margaret & Dan- Engagement Session

You may recognize the faces of Margaret and Dan. I recently did their engagement session in San Diego last month and because of the fun and synergy we had I asked them to model for me in my recent photographer shootout in Santa Barbara. All the colors and textures of downtown truly flattered the both of them. The gorgeous weather also helped their carefree nature show in their smiles and led to silly moments of pure enjoyment. Jen & Patrick- Engagement Session

Jen's voice carried excitement through the phone as she told me news of her engagement. She was ecstatic, but I soon learned that her personality is one that is always full of joy and life. When I met her fiance Patrick I found that he's a great compliment bringing in a love that is magnetic between them and a privilege to capture in photographs. The late afternoon of our photo session presented a beautiful canvas for us to enjoy the sun and the sand. I'm looking forward to their wedding later this year! :)

Meet My Parents- Spotlight

My parents took me on a surprise trip to the foothills of the southern Sierra Neveda to Kaweah River. They told me to bring my camera along thinking I'd be satisfied with capturing the beauty of the mountains, but what they didn't know was that I'd turn it into a photo session of them. My dad is an avid reader of my blog, so I though he'd appreciate being spotlighted with my mom. :)

During our drive there we heard about Michael Jackson's death on the radio and we played tribute to him by listening to his music the entire time. It really got us in a good mood to enjoy life and each other.

There's a yummy and charming candy/ice cream store nearby that we stopped at.

Kogi BBQ Truck- Food

SFV (San Fernando Valley) is not known to be an exciting place, but when a delicious taco truck...in fact, 2 delicious taco trucks known as Kogi BBQ roll up into our stomping ground you'll find a lot of excitement from fans waiting in lines. These lines continuously stayed wrapped around a corner of a neighborhood in Northridge for 2 hours straight that night. Luckily, my friends and I arrived early and checked our Twitter accounts to see how close Kogi was, because that's the in thing, yo...don't you know?

This was my third time experiencing the cultish trend of Kogi BBQ and it's always enjoyable. Check out the post I did the first time I visited the truck. Good food and good company is never a wrong combination. During our wait the cops stopped by. Our loitering probably made the neighbors nervous and hungry...

The past two times I've had Kogi I've gotten their tacos. I have yet to try their tofu tacos, so let me know if those are good. Instead of the same order I got their Korean short rib burrito. Honestly, I don't think I had the right appetite for it because it's a heavy one so be prepared for it if you get it.

The popular item among my group of friends was the sliders that seemed to grab attention and praise very quickly, so sliders are what I'll get on my next visit.

An Opportunity That Just Got Bigger!

As you may have noticed from my Facebook updates and Twitter I'm preparing for a big summer in Cambodia. From July 27th (edited) to September 1st I’ll be volunteering my time in Phnom Penh with a non-profit organization called Tiny Toones. (www.tinytoonescambodia.com)

I’ve been presented an incredible opportunity to teach photography with the youth there. I’ll be provided a classroom at the center and a translator and will be teaching an hour every weekday. At the end of my stay there we hope to put on a photo exhibit in a nearby gallery as an event for the community and a reward for the youth. That's a 4-week program that I'm designing and gearing up for. Luckily, the administrative director of Tiny Toones and good friend, Lisa Ho, is helping me out there in Phnom Penh while I'm here in L.A.

What makes Tiny Toones special, and my reason for dedicating my time with them, is their unique and artistic outlet for the youth. They provide free breakdancing, djing, graffiti art, and music recording classes. They also integrate HIV and drug-prevention education and English and Khmer language classes. Their mission is to provide a safe, positive outlet for the youth to be encouraged and mentored, so they can hope for a better tomorrow.

Many of the youth are threatened with poverty and extreme hardships that make it difficult for them to survive. My vision with my photography class is to open their eyes to a new way of how they look at their surroundings and how images can speak volumes and inspire others to reach out and make a difference. I believe that photography is not just a craft, but a disguised solution.

Currently, I am raising funds to purchase camera supplies for the youth to use in my class. I am starting with zero supplies, but believe that provision can come especially with your help. My goal is to raise $1,500 by July 15th before I fly out to Cambodia. I invite you to join me on this opportunity to change lives for the better. June Clouds Bring Dramatic Skies

I have no complaints with the current weather here. I'm going to take advantage of the cool weather and cloudy skies before I enter into hot, hot heat. I mentioned in a recent post that I'd share with you a photo where drama in the sky can be a good thing. I'm exploring heavy black and white processing and I'm really liking the burnt look. It reminds me of the hours I spent in the dark room burning an underexposed image. You won't recognize the beach in this image, but the light on the horizon is all that matters. Do you like it?

My First Workshop!!

Finally, I'm doing a workshop! Some of you have approached me over the years asking me when I'd teach a class open to the public. Well, an opportunity finally presented itself and I'm doing a 3-hour workshop in Studio City next month on July 18th. I hope you can make it out!

I'll be sharing a lot of good info on how to shoot manually and all the great things you can do to train your eye and become an incredible photographer. The cost is $20 for students, $30 for non-students, and $50 for engaged/married couples who want to come together. Everything I raise from this workshop will be used to purchase camera supplies for the work I'll be doing with the youth in Cambodia in August.

Birthday BBQ @ Dockweiler Beach

Los Angeles is known for good beach weather perfect for driving with the top down and surfing... except for the day when we went. At Dockweiler Beach the clouds were thick in the sky and the wind made us wish we brought warmer jackets, but it wouldn't stop us from celebrating James' birthday. On days like this you can find pretty active skies that create drama in photos. In a future entry I'll show you some heavy black and white images I created from this same session and you'll see the drama that I'm talking about.

Margaret & Dan- Engagement Session

Margaret lives in Los Angeles. Dan lives in San Diego. Both are friends with Kris who one day encourages Dan to call Margaret up and get to know her. Shortly after they both took turns driving up and down to visit each other. They were magnetic and in love. And, at a recent dinner party Dan surprised Margaret with a sweet proposal to marry him. They invited me to photograph them in San Diego and later again this year for their wedding. Thank you, Dan & Margaret for allowing me to capture your story. Thanks, too, to Nico who assisted me at our photo session. He got a cool shot of me at the bottom of this entry. :)

Paramount Ranch Shootout

There's a beautiful ranch a short drive from where I live. Between nature's best fields and hikes there's an old Western movie set at Paramount Ranch park. The faded colors and simple lines and textures of the buildings are fake (you can't go inside them), but deliver a great background when needed.

This was the setting for my "Photographers' Time to Play" 2nd shootout. The turnout was fantastic and at least twice as big as those who came out to the first one. I met many talented photographers with great models who came with them. I invited everyone after our session to my place to edit our day's work and prepare it for a slideshow to present at the end of the night. You can see a glimpse of the fun we had that day on the video below.

Mar, my friend from college, reconnected with me and I asked her to be my model. She did fantastic and brought out my vision for the afternoon incredibly. I requested both a hippie and cowgirl look from her to create a unique blend of adventure and youthfulness that I wanted. Enjoy all the photos and the video :)

Jabberworck Drama- Special Event

A couple years ago I worked at a private school part-time assisting a kindergarten class. During my time there staff soon found out about my photography work that I did when I wasn't teaching. After I decided to commit full-time to photography and leave the school I've been invited many times to take photos of the 8th graders, or do family portraits and to recently get theatrical stills for the drama class. I liked how I was able to incorporate portraits and candids throughout the session.

Golf Tournament- Special Event

I've never witnessed a golf tournament live or driven a golf cart...live, but I got to do both when I photographed a fundraiser at Moorpark Country Club for the Shepherd of the Hills Golf Tournament. It was a fun morning. It almost felt like I was covering an assignment for a newspaper again. The best was exploring the course with a golf cart on a beautiful day. Plus, the sports ministry at Shepherd of the Hills raised a good amount of money to grow the ministry and for scholarship funds. Staff Retreat- Special Event

The non-profit, YPI, that I teach photography with invited me to photograph their 1st staff retreat held at Camp Hess Kramer in Malibu. Their morning included a full itinerary of team-building and physical activities like rock climbing and high rope courses hosted by Fulcrum Adventures. I was tempted many times to ask one of them to harness me so I can climb up and try it myself. In my head it seemed like a good idea, but who knows if I would've really done it. :)

Mr. & Mrs. Beach- Wedding

Tucked in Agoura Hills is Malbou Lake, the beautiful setting for Tamie & Tracy's wedding. The sunlight came through despite the rainy days before and created the perfect conditions for an outdoor ceremony. It created a good blend of calmness and anticipation to bless the wedding party.

Tamie and Tracy chose to see each other before the ceremony and the choice proved it itself to be a wise and beautiful one. The intimacy of the First Look along with the musicians rehearsing outside made it a moment I didn't dare to interrupt, but to instead stay back and capture. The day was wonderful to document from their unique ceremony to their drive off in a Lotus! I thank them for giving me the honor to photograph their union :)

Downtown Visalia- Portrait Session

Over Memorial Day weekend I got some needed R&R at my parent's place. Plenty of swimming, karaoke, and mama's cooking. Last night my family decided to watch the X-men Wolverine movie and something caught my eye while we were parking in the public garage. The way the light fell in between the alleyway of the garage inspired me to take a closer look. Now you should know that when I plan a shoot I sometimes do location scouting, but sometimes I accidentally find a place like an ordinary side street that bounces light oh-so-nicely. I immediately planned to return in the morning with my sister for a spontaneous shoot.

Photojournalism work in Cambodia

Over the past couple of weeks I've been raising funds to get over to Phnom Penh this summer to do my first initiated photojournalism project. I'll be volunteering with Tiny Toones, the hip hop youth center that I've mentioned a few times in my blog. *Update* So far I've raised 74% of what I need for my airfare and need $335 more. Self-Portrait

This is something I don't do often: take a self-portrait of myself. It's one of those things where I'm not completely comfortable with sharing how I feel about myself for the camera. In fact, the last time I took one it involved tungsten lighting, a private studio room on campus, and fake cherry blossoms. That was back in 2004. Five years later, earlier tonight, another inclination invited me to give it a try once more.

My portrait is assuredly not the most compelling, but the most telling for the moment. Here I'm not ready to face the camera and I'll tell you why. I'm looking elsewhere for an answer, for directions with a defined destination, and since I don't know what that is I can't face towards you. I'm waiting to figure out my next move in life and that most likely means a relocation.

Recently, I had a conversation with friends where we each had to think of a metaphor that currently describes who we are. My response was a car without it's wheels in an auto shop unable to go anywhere until it's repaired and ready to safely get back on the road again. I feel that God is preparing my heart and mind for the near future and until I'm good to go I am to wait and be diligently where I am. Almost immediately there was disagreement with my choice since I'm seen as someone who is always moving, always creating, and involved with many busy things. They had a good point, but I still see stillness and anticipation.

So, here I am with my parked car in the garage. I've revised my metaphor and this time my car has wheels and is ready to go, except I'm not able to jump in just yet. Maybe next time I share a self-portrait with you there'll be a change. My hope is that there will be. :)

Cupcakes and Car Collisions

Bigger and better photos. I know it's what you want to see. It's also what I want and I'm finally getting around to learning how to do it! I thought I'd start off by enticing you with large photos of cupcakes. Delicious cupcakes. First, I must tell you why I bought them. Yumminess was not the only reason.

On my way to meet up with a friend for lunch I got into an accident on the street. When I merged into the left lane I miscalculated my room to move and hit a truck to the right of me. My fault and a stupid, stupid mistake. I wasn't speeding. I wasn't being a moron not thinking of what I was doing. I just made a dumb merge. It resulted in my right side view mirror cracking and unhinging from my car as if it decided to go for a bungee jump. The truck I hit got a minor, thin scratch on the back. I knew it was my fault. Of course. So, I pulled off into a parking lot nearby and waited to apologize to the other driver.

When the driver came out with her passenger (who I soon discovered to be her daughter) she was furious. No surprise there. I walked calmly to them and started to apologize only to be met with more furiousness. The daughter started translating for me to the mom because she only knew spanish, but I didn't need translations for her anger. I got it. I didn't want it, but a headache came from all the heat I was getting for a tiny scratch. She didn't care about my car, because it doesn't matter when it's your fault in the incident. As best as I could I stayed calm and kept my politeness. All I wanted her to know was that I'd take full responsibility, but she wanted me to magically take the scratch off. Finally, worry hit me and all I can think of was dollar bills to repair both hers and my car. Her anger was stealing away my cool.

A couple hours later I arrived late to my class, because I avoided the freeway to avoid a flying rear view mirror flying off into someone else's vehicle. The collision, the tardiness, and the headache of worries made it all over my face. The first thing my students asked was why I looked so down. The explanation only made me realize how bad I felt. No one got hurt, there was no big damage on either cars, I'm still walking with my dreams still alive in me and yet, I felt so bad. How is it that we can beat ourselves up more than anyone? No matter what good thoughts I made myself think of I couldn't get myself to feel lighter today....

That is until I remembered the cupcake store nearby the school. On my drive back home I made a stop at Famous Cupcakes and treated myself to selecting 4 different delights: Red Velvet, Hot Chocolate, Coconut chocolate, and Vanilla chocolate. They all made it's way into a box especially for me. I felt foolish, but enjoyed it the entire time! I'm not one to receive treats and free gifts from anyone, so something as simple as selecting cupcakes just for the heck of it made me feel a little better.

I know I'm not the only one guilty for doing something like this. You know...buying cupcakes after you collided with another car. Although it may seem like my point here is to spend money on things you like to feel better about life, it's not! Sometimes it's O.K. to show yourself that it's O.K. I'll repeat that. Sometimes it's O.K. to show yourself that it's O.K! Plus, my friends and family know that I don't normally do this for myself, so you can ask them if you're not yet convinced with my point :)

Photography- Where It All Started For Me

In high school I was obsessed with music before photography. For me the beats and melodies all came together and in it I quickly found my place. Marching band, jazz, symphonic, orchestra, punk rock: all of it I explored. It wasn't until my senior year when I joined the yearbook team that I took interest in anything more than a disposable camera. Still, photography meant nothing more than a good grade in class. Much of my free time apart from rehearsals and performances was spent in the 808 scene at different shows. I wanted to capture the live music and the energy and my disposable wasn't satisfactory. I turned to my friend, Jessica, and had her introduce me to an SLR and explain the f/scale and shutter speed combos. I was incredibly confused, but lost in the love of the quality and magic of photography.

My first year of college at UH Manoa I enrolled in a photography class to educate myself on film and how to develop it (or accidentally ruin it). The darkroom easily became my second home. I loved the contact sheets, the smell of the fixer, and the possibilities and worlds you could explore with a camera. I decided to keep music as a serious hobby and pursue a B.A. in journalism, not as a photographer but a writer. I still didn't see the signs of where I was going. I wanted to research, report, and write.

In an effort to further explore my place in life I went from beautiful Hawaii to Cal State Northridge and transfered over there to complete my undergraduate education. Why the heck would I do that, you may wonder? It's a long story (with a good ending). I continued taking photography classes and got into studio lighting and all the glitz and glamour of that. I was given my own set of keys to a room full of C-stands, strobes, and backgrounds. Every opportunity I had I invited friends to model for me and taught myself how to direct and instruct them how to be comfortable and give me what I wanted. My vision of photography led to a higher level of fun, but I kept it tied to my side with no idea that it'd release itself into my future.

Towards the last year of college I got more involved with the campus newspaper and magazine. I believed then that my career belonged somewhere in print media. During the summer I interned for Look Look Magazine and they requested my photos be used for Virgin Mobile, which got many shots of my friends on their homepage as well as on their product packaging.

As you can see, music still made it's way back into my priorities and I began to think that I could become a concert photographer for the big celebrity musicians and bands. I got the privilege of interviewing and photographing bands like Rx Bandits, Something Corporate, Newsboys, and Jimmy Eat World. Slowly, photography was becoming me. When I invested in my first DSLR I carried it with me everywhere and named it "Micah" short for "my camera". Micah is still with me five years later and remains to be my main camera.

After I graduated in 2005 I took a holiday at my parent's place in Hawaii and gave myself a hiatus to think about my next steps in life. For reasons unknown I had no interest in getting a job at a newspaper or magazine. Instead I thought it'd be a good idea to launch a website with all the photos I've taken of my friends and family and many random things that made up my online portfolio. The first day of www.jenmayphotography.com I got over 600 unique visitors. I experienced my first overwhelming moment of sharing my photos. I liked it. A lot.

From there, like a rock rolling down a tall hill, my business picked up speed to where it is today. I got a job at a portrait studio called Epic Imagery and quickly learned the ropes of professional wedding photography. Once I felt that I needed more time to run my craft with a growing cliental I became a full-timer and understood the truth of a starving artist. Many lessons and shooting gigs later I find myself still loving what I do. I thank God for his faithfulness. It's put me in a place where I daily honor him with my passion and a mission to make a difference and inspire.

Recently, I've developed a motion of action to help non-profits and get back to my roots of journalism by partnering my photography and writing together. The results are exciting. This August I'll be traveling to Phnom Phen, Cambodia to volunteer my time and talents there. I'll be helping with an organization called Tiny Toones (you can read up on the many recent entries on my blog) and will hopefully, be teaching a photography class to the kids in that area. My goal is to chase after what I've been dreaming about, making a social impact through the simplicity of sharing a real life story.

Spotlight- Featured Non-Profits

Aside from wearing the hats of running a photography business I also work a couple hours a day with a non-profit teaching photography after-school at different high schools in the valley. It's my way of staying creative to my craft and giving back to the youth. Last month I competed in a nationwide contest that asked photographers what sort of personal project they would fund with $50,000. My response listed goals to unite different non-profits around the world by documenting their stories. I didn't win. In fact, I came out short by 800 or so votes. Instead of shrugging my shoulders and moving on in life I hosted a thank you party to everyone who supported me in the contest to inform them of my current pursuits. Somehow in my lifetime I will do my best to document stories of others helping others in need.

Below are some detail shots from my party last night. There was good coffee and yummy desserts. Plus, an intimate group of friends who came out to celebrate with me. I featured seven different organizations including Tiny Toones, REVO LA, To Write Love On Her arms, Invisible Children, Love 146, The Sold Project, and Toms Shoes. They’re the first hip-hop learning center in Phnom Phen, Cambodia that offers free classes to the youth such as break dancing, HIV and drug prevention, English and Khmer, djing, and mentorship. Their goal is to inspire them to be leaders in their community. Currently, they’re on their first USA tour and will be fundraising in LA on Sunday, May 3^rd. Come join the movement! I will be traveling to Cambodia this year to help their organization for a month. My goals include doing photojournalistic work of the children involved there and doing a free photography workshop for their community.

REVO LA (www.revola.org)

REVO is a movement based on the concepts of love, grace and equality, and social justice. They place special emphasis on art and creativity. Over the past few years since their first show in Hilo, HI they have grown with REVO branches all over the US, including LA. Our LA branch’s goal is to put on an art show this year that heightens awareness of West Papua, Indonesia’s broken school system. I was invited to be one of their writers and contribute articles to their blog and will be researching and informing readers of the current state of education in West Papua.

An organization dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. They exist encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment and recovery. They believe rescue is possible, and are committed to communicating hope to other who knows the daily struggle of living in a broken world.

Invisible Children (www.invisiblechildren.com)

A documentary that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda’s night commuters and child soldiers. Their work hopes to educate and inspire individuals to use their unique voice for change through the media. In war-affected regions they focus on long-term development, working directly with individuals and institutions that are eager to realize their full potential. Just yesterday (April 25^th) they initiated a worldwide event called The Rescue where they encouraged activists to camp out in their city until a mogul, a person with great influence, rescues them by visiting them and voicing their support.

Love protects, defends, restores, empowers. This organization offers practical and effective solutions through prevention and aftercare. Such examples are the safe homes and aftercare workers they provide around the world. Their mission is to abolish sex slavery.

The Sold Project (www.thesoldproject.com)

Also, a film that grew to be a movement dedicated to inspiring and empowering individuals to stop child prostitution before it begins. They seek to support partner organization in Thailand that work in the areas of rescue and rehabilitation for children at-risk.

Toms Shoes (www.tomsshoes.com)

For every pair of shoes you purchase from TOMS, they will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. The founder, Blake Mycoskie, wanted to help protect the children’s feet in Argentina when he first started, but now wants to provide shoes around the world.

Engagement Session- Angela & Jerry

Save The Date- Photographer Shootout

For this event we'll be meeting at Paramount Ranch commonly known as the "movie ranch" since many Hollywood T.V. shows/movies were filmed there. There is a Western Town there complete with a Main Street lined with typical storefronts, such with a Sheriff's office, a blacksmith/livery, a saloon, a Post Office, and barns.

Just like at the last shootout, photographers will each have models to work with as they do the challenges that will be given that day. So, invite your friends or scout for models to participate. This is your time to have fun with your creativity.

We will shoot until sundown, 7 p.m., and afterwards we'll be heading down to my place to upload photos and prepare the slideshow to be displayed at the end of the night. We'll also be ordering food so you can kick it there. Please bring a laptop if you have one to speed the uploading time for the slideshow.

Remember, anyone is welcome, professional photographer or not. Hopefully, we'll have enough models so that those who couldn't take photos before can take photos at this event.

Portrait Session- Niña Pastores

Visalia is a central California city placed in the heart of an agricultural San Joaquin Valley. This is where my parents currently reside and is about the same distance north from L.A. as if I were to drive down south to San Diego. During my week long break at home I went without my camera, taking no photos, to give myself a hiatus for meditation. I needed to breathe from the demands of living in a place like Los Angeles, so that I could remember why I first chose to pursue my craft. I contemplated the many roads I could take with photography and easily knew my love is to capture people and to somehow illustrate who they are in the best light. This entry is beginning to foreshadow my decisions I've made for the future of my work, but for right now I will share some images that I took of my youngest sister, Niña. Her arrival for Easter presented a good reason to pick up my camera again since I felt it was time for a creative release.

Below are my favorites. I designed the shoot to be vintage and hip, very fitting for my sister's personality. We found a field nearby and borrowed my dad's Camaro and mom's guitar to complete our shoot's outfit. Let me know what you think :)

Photographer Shootout- Downtown Los Angeles

What do you get when you combine photographers and friends in downtown Los Angeles? Creativity. Inspiration. Good company. Fun. Truly, all of the above. The turnout was small, but the event progressed to be a successful one. Below is a video/photo montage of our day and below that you'll see many of my favorite images from my set of work. My friends Dane and Sami came out to model for me and their eagerness for me to photograph them opened a world of excitement for me. :)

Two photographers joined along, both talented and working professionals in their own respective field. At the very bottom of this entry I included some shots of Isaac Suttell of Suttell Photography. Other than creating beautiful imagery his talents extend to that of photoshop mastery and web design. Also, Peter Garr of Peter Garr Photography is a wedding photographer based out of Santa Clarita. His talent shows not only in his style of shooting, but through his heart to give back. Any client who books a wedding with Peter gets the choice to have a portion of their photography package cost donated to a charity of their choice. I don't know why I didn't think of something like that sooner!

Ron Swing- Interior Design Shoot

Recently, I had my first interior shoot. The experience was different from what I'm used to, especially since I had to work with designers who have specific shots of what they want. Overall, I enjoyed the challenge of learning how to use my photography in different fields. Let me know what you think of some of the shots I got! San Diego- A Weekend Out Of Town

A couple weekends ago I drove down to San Diego with my roommates. I had a family session booked that weekend at Balboa Park, so I made it into a weekend trip and invited good company to come along with me. The couple hours drive down the coast of California is easily worth it when you get to enjoy a beautiful city like San Diego.

Photographers' Time To Play- Save The Date

Open to any kind of photographer at any level. Come out and enjoy a day of shooting in downtown L.A! It'll be a great opportunity to meet others who also love photography and to shoot creatively with your friends.

We'll be meeting in the parking lot of the Global Cafe, so we can then carpool together to the Universal City Metro Station close by. We'll all be catching the Red Line to Union Station where our main location of shooting will be.

I'll be splitting everyone into teams where each team will receive a list of challenges to get during their shooting time. Please invite your friends to come out and model for us, so that each team will have models to work with.

After the shooting portion of the day we'll be meeting back at Union Station to take the Red Line back to Universal City where will then proceed back to the Global Cafe.

Please also bring a laptop if you have one so that you can upload your photos. Once we're all back at the Global Cafe you'll turn in your shots from the day to me.

We can put in an order for pizza for everyone and I'll put on some fun episodes on the screen while you wait to see everyone's photos. I'll be putting together a slideshow during that time so by the end of the night we can all watch and enjoy our day's work.

Kogi BBQ-To-Go Taco Truck

On a corner off of Sunset in Silver Lake (district of East Hollywood) waited eager customers in a line for a truck that was not yet present. Last night was my first time to try the buzz of Korean tacos going around Los Angeles. They're called Kogi BBQ-To-Go "born out of an idea for late night hunger." Their specialty is serving Korean BBQ in tacos and burritos and their strength in marketing is credited to their many updates on Twitter.

I joined with a few of my friends to take part in the late night experience, and left the experience with good thoughts and a smile that happily snacked away on tasty food. I ordered three different tacos at $2 each: Korean short ribs, spicy BBQ chicken, and spicy pork. I also tasted the specialty that night, kimchee quesadillas. I found my hour wait in line to be worth it and determined that the short ribs was my favorite. Next time I will try their burritos. In The Spotlight

The Dream Assignment Team selected me as one the ideas to be spotlighted on their news feed section of the web site's home page. It's a new feature they're adding so that they can raise more attention to the many proposals on their site. This morning they e-mailed me a set of questions to answer that they'll post on the site beginning this week. Below are my answers to what they asked me. I'll let you know when I'm spotlighted in their news feed. Thank you again for those who are supporting me and my idea. :)

Q: Describe your dream assignment in 5 words or less.

A: Let's bring unity through community.

Q:Where did your dream assignment idea come from?
A: This is an idea that's been stirring in my heart for quite some time. Currently, I work as professional photographer and since I started my work three years ago I've been exploring ways to define who I am as a photographer. When I was working towards my journalism degree a few years ago I realized the power of influence that the media has and the importance and responsibility of informing the public, but I knew that there had to be a better way to capture the attention of others and a more fitting place where I could put my passions to use. With the advantage of the blogging world and popular social networks the opportunity to inform the public is much larger than ever before. To be more specific, I can bring a personal story of a non-profit organization and the work they're doing from across the world to a "tiny url" link online that has the potential for thousands to view and for thousands to offer their help to them. I believe this work is a part of the definition of who I am as a photographer and my role in this world: one that informs, inspires, and acts on the opportunities to help make a difference.

Q: How would you approach photographing your dream assignment?
A: My approach would be a labor of love. I have a passion for photography and writing and my desire is for that to come together, so that I can work on meaningful stories that have potential for social impact. My passions alone would carry me far in my pursuits to work hard and diligently. Plus, helping non-profits to get better exposure for what they do is a lifestyle I wouldn't hesitate to work for. By communicating their strengths and needs to a following of viewers there can be a positive influence on both ends to live a life that is more than just ourselves, but giving unto others even when times are hard.

Q: What kind of thoughts and/or reactions would you like others to have when they view the photos of your dream assignment?
A: Inspiration. That's my ultimate goal with this dream assignment. If I can inspire someone through a photograph that moves them to act on their conviction or to give of themselves or to help fundraise for a cause, than I would be doing my job as a photojournalist. Also, I'd like to encourage and uplift others through my choice of work and to also tell a story with the images that I capture.

Q: What would you like to accomplish if you would win your dream assignment?
A: My goal is to visit as many non-profit organizations as I can around the world by featuring their stories on my blog for others to view from and learn about. The money that I'd get from winning this contest would go a long way in setting up my budget to travel through many, different places so that I can document the causes they're working for in their community. My hope is to accomplish a measure of unity for those working together to make a difference. Also, to extend an invite to my viewers to unite alongside the several causes that I'll be featuring.

Portrait Session- Robinson Brothers

I met up with Adam at Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Adam is a past co-worker of mine with a shared interest in photography. Recently, his dad made a request for updated photos of him and his brothers, and as a birthday gift for their dad they arranged to do a photo session with me. I'm glad they decided not to go to the mall for quick shots, because working with them was a lot of fun and doing their photos elsewhere would do no justice to their personalities. I think their dad and the rest of their family will love and appreciate their gift.

I've entered my very first photography contest and this really means a lot to me! Please help me out by voting for me by clicking on the box below or this link, and asking others to help me in this dream photography assignment of mine. This isn't a small contest, but a very BIG one! Thank you for your vote. Voting closes on April 3rd, but please vote as soon as you can since ideas are sorted by popularity of ratings. The contest I've entered is through "Name your Dream Assignment" Contest sponsored by Lenovo and Microsoft. Submitted entries are to describe what their dream assignment would be with the budget of $50,000. The winner gets that amount to bring their dream assignment to life. They also get a digital camcorder and Lenovo's Think Pad with Microsoft Windows Vista.

Unity Through Community

Non-profit organizations give of their time and energy so that they can help make the world a better place. No matter where or who they are they all share a desire to help. May their documented story continue to unite and inspire us.

Everyone wants the world to be a better place, and I think what a lot of people look for in answers on how to do something so big are ways that they can help in their community. The culture of non-profit organizations is an attractive source for many when desiring to give of their time, energy, and money for a bigger cause.

We hear of great organizations doing great things every once in a while when we're not looking. Whether it's a story featured in an article or a television show we aren't as exposed to the wonderful things these non-profits are doing. We, especially, aren't hearing about it as a worldwide means.

If we can help in our own community, than shouldn't we try to unify non-profits around the world to make a stronger impact that'll get more people informed and excited? I think by documenting stories of wonderful organizations around the world through photography and writing, there would be an increase in individuals wanting to help.

I believe photojournalism is powerful and can influence for the better. As we feature different non-profits making awesome changes in their community, not only does it give them exposure on a larger scale, but it also gives a face and a name to causes that aren't as familiar to many of us. Those faces and names belong to people who have stories that can inspire and move millions worldwide.

With the advantage of the Internet and media my dream assignment is to cover as many non-profits around the world as I can, so that I can inform readers through my blog, my photos/videos/writing and let it move others to give a helping hand. I want to bring unity through community, and I believe this can happen with the help of winning this contest.

I've always had a heart to share stories and am currently pursuing a career as a professional photographer with a journalism degree so that I can do assignments like this for as long as I can. I think we all could use hearing and seeing another good story that stirs our hearts and asks us to help make the world a better place.

I've already begun my research by finding non-profits around the world on websites like idealist.org. It would be an honor to photograph and work alongside each organization that I meet, and I would give all that I can to do my best on this assignment. Daikokuya

In Little Tokyo, Downtown Los Angeles sits a humble small restaurant called Daikokuya. They serve their popular and original noodle and rice-bowls including their Daikoku Ramen that's to daydream about. A group of us walked into the shop late Friday night (they don't close until 1 a.m.) to enjoy the comfort of their food. If you're in the area you should not miss the opportunity to enjoy the selections of their menu! As you'll see all the photos below are taken from inside, so I saved the outside of the restaurant for you to go visit yourself. I, especially, didn't include photos of the actual food as an added incentive for you to go :)

Carl Zeiss 50 1.4 Review & The Amazing Patrica- Review/Spotlight

Here's an entry I hope you'll enjoy. It's for the lens enthusiasts, LightRoom preset lovers, and those who like a good read with photos of a wonderful friend that I've spotlighted.

First a review: The Carl Zeiss 50mm 1.4 ZE is an item that I would call a collectors lens. Borrowlenses.com recently posted this on their site and I happen to call at the right time to be the first photographer to rent it from them. I say "collectors" because the lens is solely operated as a manual focus, and who these days want to operate a lens like that on a digital? Apparently, I do. The entire engagement session from Valentine's Day was shot with the Zeiss. The following images are also all shot with this lens. It's mountable on all Canon EOS cameras and if you're wondering, I still use my rockin' 20D (named Micah). Maybe it's silly to name a camera, but it's not silly if gets me to take better care of it because it has a name! You can read more about my past reviews on Borrowlenses.com and Canon's 50mm 1.2 that I've rented the first before the Zeiss. All around I'm pleased with the Zeiss lens and recommend you to give it a try. Just be patient with the manual focusing.

Spotlight: My friend Patricia is one of my roommates that I live with. For the past five years I've had the pleasure of experiencing a one-of-a-kind friendship with her. We both enjoy similar things like the simplicity of living life for the sake of living or how we can bring serious matters to a place of trusting the unseen and having faith to do it. Other than being my friend she is also a single mom with an eight-year-old son named Christian (I've spotlighted him a few months ago). I watch her life as a good example to stand strong and to endure, and while doing it, to laugh and love and to open my life to others so that they may share in my joy, or in the worst of times to help me stand strong again. Honestly, I love her and her extraordinary personality. You may read a little bit about her on her blog.

Lightroom Presets: You'll notice some fun digital processing on most of my images. I've been exploring Lightroom, so that I can discover all the ooohs and ahhs. I also scored some free presets at Presets Heaven. At the very bottom of this entry I included some wild art shots. Hope you like them!

February Photo Contest

This month's challenge: "Love Is In The Air"

2. Do not place your name on logo on the image. When we get to vote the photos will be anonymous. Names of who took the photos will be revealed after the winner is decided.
3. Photos will be posted on this blog and voting will begin on the 26th.
4. Winner will be revealed on February 28 and receives bragging rights :)

Engagement Session- Tamie & Trace

They both love the outdoors and can get the other one to laugh with ease. They're one of those couples who radiate a sense of purpose and hold a great attitude on life that can get them through anything. I met up with Tamie and Trace in Pasadena on Valentine's Day, certainly a wonderful day to have a romantic photo session! Their entire session from start to finish was a blast and definitely indicates how fun it'll be to cover their wedding in May.
